Interview with Guglielmo Pasqualin winemaker at Bottega S.p.A.
After his High-School Diploma at Scuola Enologica di Conegliano, Guglielmo applied his inner love to the world of wine. A great connoisseur of the region of Marca Trevigiana, he has an infallible sense for quality in the winery. His vast experience and his management skills make him a complete professional.
Q: How did you start your career in wine making?
A: I started by providing technical assistance in vineyards in the province of Treviso and followed the vinification and processing of wines in a winery in the province of Verona.
Q: What is your favourite wine that you have made and why?
A: Prosecco DOCG Rive because it is a complex, elegant and sapid sparkling wine that brings out the vocation and characteristics of the hills from which the grapes come.
Q: What makes a good vintage?
A: The interaction of climate with the wine-growing ecosystem and cultivation technique.
Q: Which is your favourite varietal to work with and why?
A: Glera because it is a vine that expresses a territory, as it manages to bring out the characteristics and peculiarities of the different microclimates in an extraordinary way.
Q: What is the biggest challenge facing wine makers today?
A: Facing the consequences of climate change on vine cultivation and maintaining the identity of wines.
Q: In your opinion which is the best wine making country in the world and why?
A: Italy because it has a heritage of vines and wine-growing areas that is unique in the world.
Q: Which lesser-known varietals would you recommend customers to try?
A: Incroci Manzoni, mainly Manzoni Moscato 6-013. It is a niche production, as the amazing sweet rosé sparkling wine contained in Il Vino dell’Amore Petalo Manzoni Moscato.
Q: If you could drink just one wine, what would it be?
A: Prosecco Spumante because it is a very versatile wine that is suitable for many occasions.
Q: Who do you most admire in the wine trade and why?
A: Sandro Bottega because I have directly had the opportunity to appreciate his ability to make his wines known in all parts of the world.
Q: What is the best food/wine pairing with one of your wines?
A: Prosecco Spumante with raw shellfish (oysters, truffles, sea nuts/seafood)
